Visited with: Spouse, Group (multiple visits)
One bar that I’ve found myself returning to again and again — most recently in October 2024 — is Aran Irish Pub, a reliable all-rounder that captures the spirit of a good Irish bar while being in one of the best locations in the city.
You’ll find Aran at Max Euweplein right by Leidseplein, one of Amsterdam’s busiest nightlife hubs, and literally across the road from the main entrance to Vondelpark. It is a location that couldn’t be more convenient: start the day with a stroll in the park, pop in for a hearty breakfast and a pint, then head back later for live sport or an evening with friends. The Hard Rock Café is also right next door if you fancy a change of pace, and there’s even a handy gift shop across the way if you need to pick up something to bring home.
Inside, Aran feels like a proper Irish pub – warm, lively, and just busy enough to have a buzz without being overwhelming. There’s also a good-sized outdoor area, which is perfect for people-watching when the weather’s decent. Food-wise, their breakfast is one of my absolute go-tos in Amsterdam, especially if I’m hungover! It’s hearty, satisfying, and exactly what you need to get back on track. The fact that you can order a pint alongside your fry-up makes it even more appealing — sometimes the only cure really is a breakfast beer!

The pub also doubles as a strong spot for sports fans. They are good for showing Premier League matches, and the upstairs pool table gives you something extra to do if you’re there with a group. I’ve been there with my spouse for a quiet visit and also with larger groups of lads, and the experience has always been solid. On my most recent trip in October 2024 with a group, Ryan from the staff stood out for looking after us brilliantly — the kind of service that makes a difference.
That said, not every experience has been perfect. On one occasion I waited nearly 20 minutes trying to get the staff’s attention, only to be ignored. Frustrated, we gave up and left for another bar. To be fair, that was very much the exception rather than the rule, but worth mentioning for balance.
Overall, though, Aran Irish Pub is one of those places I could easily imagine being my “local” if I moved to Amsterdam permanently. Between the great location, solid food and drink, lively atmosphere, and mix of tourists and locals, it’s a pub that just works.
Whether you’re there for breakfast, pints with friends, or to catch a match, it’s a spot that delivers more often than not — and one I’ll certainly keep going back to when I am visiting Amsterdam.
My Rating: ★★★★☆
Until next time, slán agus beannacht!
