Travelled with: Spouse

In this latest in our series of Amsterdam hotel reviews, we review the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station, located at Oosterdoksstraat 4. This is definitely one of the most conveniently located hotels in the city. From Schiphol Airport, we took a direct train to Amsterdam Centraal Station, and the hotel is literally right next door, even with a bit of luggage it’s no hassle getting from the train to hotel reception. For anyone arriving in Amsterdam city centre by train, it’s hard to imagine a better base. This central position is the first of many strong points in favour of the hotel.

On arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff at reception who immediately made us feel welcome. The warm chocolate chip cookie offered at check-in is a signature DoubleTree touch and always a nice surprise after travelling. Check-in was quick and efficient, and within minutes we were on our way to our room. We had booked a Superior Queen Room with a view for six nights, planning to use the hotel mainly as a base while we explored Amsterdam once again and visited some nearby attractions.

The Room and Views

At first glance, our room was a little smaller than expected when compared to the pictures online when we had booked. However, what it lacked in size, it more than made up for with the view. We had specifically chosen a room overlooking the IJ River, and it was worth the upgrade. Watching the city lights reflect on the water at night was a real highlight of the stay, and during the day we could see ferries, boats, and the buzz of life on the waterfront. For anyone who appreciates a great view, this is highly recommended.

The view from our room across the IJ

The room itself was modern and comfortable, with everything you’d expect from a Hilton property – a plush bed (and very comfortable), good quality linens, and a well-equipped bathroom. Housekeeping was consistent, and the room was kept spotless throughout our stay.

Breakfast and Dining

Each morning we ate breakfast in the hotel. The buffet offered plenty of choice, from continental options like pastries, cold meats, and cheeses, to hot dishes such as eggs, sausages, and bacon. Fresh fruit and juices were also available. While the breakfast was satisfying, it could feel a little crowded during peak times, particularly between 8:30am and 9:30am. This is probably a reflection of just how popular the hotel is with tourists, business travellers, and families, and I can certainly see why that is.

One of the dining highlights of the hotel is its rooftop bar, LuminAir. Recently renovated, it has quickly become a destination in its own right. The atmosphere is stylish and lively, with sweeping views across the city. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail at sunset or unwind after a day of sightseeing. Because it’s such a popular spot, I would highly recommend heading up early in the evening to secure a good table if you are planning on staying for a few hours (we did!).

Location and Accessibility

The location of this hotel is its biggest selling point. Within a few minutes, you can walk to the Damrak, the main artery of the city centre, and from there explore the historic canal district, the Red Light District, or take a stroll to Dam Square. If you’re planning to visit attractions a little further out, such as Artis Zoo or the NEMO Science Museum, both are within walking distance or just a short tram ride away. The convenience of being so close to public transport means you can also easily reach places like the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, or even take a day trip to nearby towns.

For couples, the location offers plenty of opportunities for romantic walks along the canals and evenings out. Families will also find it practical thanks to the nearby attractions, open spaces, and easy transport connections.

Conclusion

Overall, the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station is an excellent choice for travellers who value convenience and comfort in the heart of the city. The welcoming staff, modern rooms, and stunning views make it a memorable place to stay. While the breakfast area can get busy at times and the rooms aren’t the largest, these are minor trade-offs for the unbeatable location and quality of service.

If you’re planning a trip to Amsterdam – whether as a couple, a family, or even solo – this hotel offers everything you need for a comfortable stay, plus the added bonus of one of the city’s best rooftop bars.

We would happily stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a central, reliable, and enjoyable base in Amsterdam.

My Rating: ★★★★☆

Until next time, slán agus beannacht!
