There are mornings in Amsterdam when a croissant and coffee simply will not do. Perhaps you have spent the previous day walking miles along the canals, perhaps the night before went on a little longer than planned, or perhaps you simply want something familiar and filling before heading back out to explore this wonderful city. At times like these, there is only one thing for it: a proper Irish fry up.

I have tried breakfast in several Irish pubs and cafés across Amsterdam, but the fry at Sláinte Irish Pub (Warmoesstraat 87) is the one that stands out most. For me, this is the best fry I have found in Amsterdam so far.

Sláinte Irish Pub

Sláinte is on Warmoesstraat, one of the liveliest and most central streets in Amsterdam. It is connected to the White Tulip Hostel and is only a short walk from Amsterdam Centraal, Dam Square and the Red Light District. That makes it particularly convenient when you are staying in the city centre or want to start a day of sightseeing with something substantial.

From the outside, Sláinte looks every inch the traditional Irish pub abroad. Once inside, you will find a relaxed, informal atmosphere, plenty of televisions for live sport and the familiar feeling of being somewhere that understands the importance of a decent breakfast. It may not be the fanciest in Amsterdam, but that is part of its appeal. You are not there for carefully arranged avocado or tiny portions served on oversized plates. You are there for a hearty fry, a cup of tea or coffee, and possibly even a breakfast pint when the occasion calls for it!

The Fry

We both ordered the ‘Liffey Breakfast‘, priced at €17 and it arrived as a generous plate of familiar breakfast favourites. It was very filling without trying to be overly clever, and it provided exactly the kind of comfort you hope to find from an Irish breakfast when you are away from home. What impressed me most was how satisfying the whole plate was. A good fry is not simply about putting as much food as possible onto a plate. The different parts need to work together, everything needs to arrive hot, and there needs to be enough to keep you going for several hours. Sláinte delivered on all of that.

It is the kind of breakfast that sets you up perfectly for a long day exploring Amsterdam. Eat here in the morning and you should be well prepared for a walk through the canal belt, a few hours around the museums or an afternoon sampling some of the city’s pubs.

It would also make an excellent recovery breakfast after a late night around Dam Square or the Red Light District. Sometimes, after a busy night in Amsterdam, only a proper fry will bring you back to life.

The Breakfast Menu and Prices

Sláinte offers more than just the full breakfast, with options available for anyone who wants something a little lighter.

Note: We visited in April 2026 – menu and prices are correct as of then.

As always in Amsterdam, menus and prices can change, so the photograph above reflects what was available during my visit. It is worth checking the latest menu when you arrive.

The location also adds to the value. There are countless cafés around the centre where you could easily spend a similar amount on a much smaller breakfast. At Sláinte, you get a substantial meal in a relaxed pub environment, right in the middle of the city.

Why Sláinte Gets My Vote

Amsterdam has developed a brilliant brunch scene, with no shortage of stylish cafés offering pancakes, eggs Benedict and beautifully presented breakfast dishes. However, finding a straightforward, satisfying fry can still be surprisingly difficult. Sláinte gets the basics right.

It is central, relaxed and welcoming. The portions are generous, the breakfast feels familiar, and you can enjoy it without needing to travel far from the main tourist areas. There is also something comforting about sitting in an Irish pub in Amsterdam with a full plate in front of you while the city slowly comes to life outside.

For Irish visitors missing the taste of home, or anyone who appreciates a substantial cooked breakfast, Sláinte is well worth adding to your list.

Two Worthy Mentions

Although Sláinte gets my vote for the best fry, there are two other Amsterdam breakfast spots deserving of a mention.

Aran Irish Pub

Aran Irish Pub is one of my favourite Irish bars in Amsterdam. It is located on Max Euweplein, beside Leidseplein and directly across from the entrance to Vondelpark. The location makes it a great breakfast stop before a walk through the park or a day exploring the museum district.

On this particular visit, I decided against the full Irish and ordered an omelette instead.

The omelette was a very good option when I wanted a proper sit-down breakfast without committing to a complete fry. Aran currently offers several omelettes, with combinations including ham, cheese and mushrooms, alongside its full Irish breakfast and other egg dishes.

With its outdoor seating, lively atmosphere and excellent location, Aran remains one of the most reliable places for breakfast, food or a pint around Leidseplein.

The Greasy Spoon

The other place that has to be mentioned is The Greasy Spoon, located at Kinkerstraat 24 in Amsterdam West.

This small café is entirely dedicated to the art of the fry-up. Its menu includes full English, Irish, Scottish and vegan breakfasts, along with breakfast sandwiches, beans on toast, crumpets and proper builder’s tea. The Irish fry includes sausage, bacon, fried egg, tomato, mushrooms, black and white pudding, a potato cake and soda bread.

At the time of writing, its fry-ups are listed at €14. The café operates on a walk-in basis and is currently open from Thursday to Monday, although opening days and prices should always be checked before making a special journey.

It may not have the traditional pub atmosphere of Sláinte or Aran, but when a business calls itself The Greasy Spoon and builds an entire menu around fry-ups, it certainly deserves a place in this article. If you are planning a visit, I recommend arriving early as it can get very busy.

Final Verdict

A good fry can rescue a tired traveller, cure the effects of the previous night and provide enough fuel for another full day in Amsterdam.

For its generous breakfast, welcoming Irish-pub atmosphere and extremely convenient city-centre location, Sláinte Irish Pub serves the best fry I have found in Amsterdam so far.

There may be more scientific ways to compare breakfasts, but sometimes you simply know when you have found a good one.

My Rating: ★★★★★

Until next time, slán agus beannacht!
