Visited with: Group (multiple visits)

If you’re looking for a place to unwind after the Heineken Experience, O’Donnell’s Irish Bar is a gem that’s tucked away just behind it. The first time I visited O’Donnell’s was after a trip here. Located in the De Pijp neighbourhood, just off Marie Heinekenplein, it’s the kind of pub that works equally well whether you’re dropping in for a quick pint or settling in for a longer day with friends on the beer!

First things first – the pint of Guinness here is genuinely good. That’s something I always test when visiting Irish pubs abroad, and O’Donnell’s passes the test with flying colours. On my visit, I only ordered the bitterballen (which hit the spot nicely), so I can’t give a full verdict on the rest of the food menu. That said, from what I saw arriving at other tables, it looked hearty, well-presented, and perfect for pairing with a round of drinks.

One of O’Donnell’s strengths in my opinion is its versatility. I’ve been here with just a couple of friends and also with a larger group on a 40th birthday party weekend in Amsterdam, and both times it worked seamlessly. There’s enough space to accommodate a crowd without losing that cosy pub feel. Plus, the layout gives you options: you can sit up front and watch the world go by (it is a surprisingly good people-watching spot), or head towards the back where you’ll find a pool table if you’re in the mood for a game.

The staff deserve a mention too — warm, welcoming, and efficient without being pushy. It’s the kind of service that makes you feel comfortable lingering over a few drinks rather than rushing off.

And while O’Donnell’s is an obvious place to order pints, it also surprised me with its cocktail game. I had my very first Negroni here (full of pints – don’t ask!), and it was excellent – proof that this isn’t just a Guinness-and-lager type of pub. If you fancy mixing things up, or like me on that occasion, are just full of beer, then it’s a good option.

All in all, O’Donnell’s is a great all-rounder in a handy location. Whether you’re stopping in after the Heineken brewery tour, catching up with friends, or just fancy a quiet pint while watching the world go by, it’s well worth a visit. Worth noting also that it is not too far of a walk from Aran Irish Pub, if you want to get a bit of a pub crawl going!

I will absolutely be back drinking Guinness in O’Donnell’s on my next trip to Amsterdam.

My Rating: ★★★★★

Until next time, slán agus beannacht!
