WestCord Fashion

Travelled with: Spouse, Group (multiple stays)

I first stumbled across the WestCord Fashion Hotel by accident back in 2015 — and it quickly became one of my go-to places to stay in Amsterdam. In fact, I’ve returned multiple times since, even including a few nights while travelling through the city on my honeymoon. My most recent stay was in October 2024, and the hotel continues to impress me as one of the best-value, well-rounded places to stay in Amsterdam.

Location and First Impressions

The WestCord Fashion Hotel is well situated if you’re flying into Schiphol. A taxi will get you there in about 15 minutes, which makes it a very convenient option after a long flight. Although not in the heart of the city centre, this is actually part of its appeal in my opinion. The hotel sits at Hendrikje Stoffelsstraat 1, between Amsterdam Nieuw-West and Oud-Zuid, with Rembrandt Park and Vondelpark nearby.

If you want to get to Dam Square, it’s easy: the Surinameplein tram stop is a short walk away, and tram lines 1 and 17 will take you there in 15–20 minutes. Alternatively, if you don’t mind stretching your legs, you can walk into the centre in under an hour. I’ve done this many times, and it’s a great way to discover parts of the city you wouldn’t normally see, especially Overtoom which I love.

Stepping into the lobby, the hotel immediately makes a strong impression. It’s bright, spacious, and spotlessly clean, with striking artwork — paintings and sculptures — scattered throughout. Check-in has always been smooth in my experience, with staff who are both professional and welcoming. If you arrive early and your room isn’t ready, there’s a secure luggage room where you can safely leave your bags. Another handy feature: you can purchase tram tickets directly at reception, a facility I have used on most of my trips when I have stayed at this hotel.

Rooms and Comfort

Over the years, I’ve stayed in both standard doubles and suites at the WestCord Fashion. The standard double rooms are noticeably larger than many similarly priced rooms in Amsterdam, offering plenty of space to relax after a day out. The suites take things up a notch, with a jacuzzi bath and balcony — perfect if you want to add a touch of luxury to your trip.

Plenty of space for clothes etc. in the standard double room – and a fully stocked minibar.

Noise has never been an issue during any of my stays. While the hotel is always busy, it’s well managed, and I’ve never had to raise a complaint about sound. Housekeeping has also been consistently reliable, keeping the rooms clean and well maintained.

One of the major perks of the location is its proximity to Museumplein, home of the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. Walking there through Vondelpark takes less than 30 minutes and makes for a scenic start to your museum day.

Dining and Bars

The WestCord Fashion has a couple of solid dining and drinking options. On the ground floor, the lobby bar offers light meals and drinks — ideal if you don’t want to head far after a day of exploring. My only criticism here is the bar service, which can be slow at times. Even when the bar isn’t busy, staff can be a little laid-back in noticing empty glasses. This may just be a cultural difference compared to Ireland, but worth noting if you’re used to quick service. However, this minor detail does not take too much from how good this hotel actually is.

The hotel’s real gem, however, is the SKYY Bar. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 6pm, it’s a sleek, stylish spot with a resident DJ, buzzing atmosphere, and excellent cocktails. My personal favourite is “The SKYY is the Limit” a vodka-based cocktail that became a regular order for me and my wife during our stays. Whether you’re looking for a lively evening without leaving the hotel or just a nightcap with a view, the SKYY Bar is a highlight that you should not miss if staying in this hotel.

A selection of cocktails (and free nuts!) we had in the SKYY bar on our last trip in late 2024

Dining is also strong at this hotel. Breakfast is served in the main restaurant with a plentiful buffet selection — fresh pastries, fruit, cooked items, and even breakfast wine if you are so inclined. Breakfast can be expensive – so I recommend booking as part of your accommodation if you can. During our multiple stays over the years, we have also enjoyed meals in the restaurant and lobby bar, both of which offered good quality food.

Why Choose the WestCord Fashion?

What I like most about the WestCord Fashion is the balance it strikes. It’s close enough to the centre to make sightseeing easy, yet far enough away to avoid the chaos of Dam Square and the Red Light District. The neighbourhood is quieter and more relaxed, with great access to parks and museums, but you’re only a short tram ride from the tourist hotspots.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the WestCord Fashion Hotel is one of the best choices for travellers from Ireland visiting Amsterdam.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic trip, a cultural break, or just a comfortable base for exploring the city, this hotel ticks the boxes. It combines spacious rooms, good dining, and standout features like the SKYY Bar, with the added benefit of being outside the busiest part of the city.

For me, it’s the best of both worlds — a stylish retreat away from the madness, yet still well connected to everything Amsterdam has to offer. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to friends – I have already recommended this hotel to multiple people, all of whom have agreed with my sentiments after they have stayed.

I am really looking forward to my next stay!

My Rating: ★★★★★

Until next time, slán agus beannacht!

  1. […] Central hotels, particularly around the canal belt, can cost an eye-watering amount. However, the city’s excellent transport network means you don’t need to stay right in the middle. Areas just outside the core, such as De Pijp, Oud-West, or Amsterdam Noord, offer noticeably better value while still keeping you close to everything. One of our favourite hotels, is actually not central at all, but the central areas are easily accessible by tram. Check out our review here: Hotel Review: WestCord Fashion Hotel. […]
