Every now and then, you come across a pub that feels like it belongs on a postcard, and Proeflokaal de Molen from Brouwerij ’t IJ at the De Gooyer Windmill at Funenkade is exactly that. A working brewery tucked under what is probably Amsterdam’s most iconic windmill, this spot combines Dutch heritage with fantastic craft beer in a way that makes it a must-visit for anyone with even a passing interest in pints. It is a bit of a walk from the city centre, but as I always say – walking is the best way to see Amsterdam and discover hidden places you might never find if you just stuck to the city centre. Worth noting also that this is quite close to Artis, the Zoo in Amsterdam, so you can always combine the two!

The setting alone makes it special. The towering De Gooyer windmill, visible from a good distance, is an unmistakable landmark. At its base you’ll find the bustling Proeflokaal de Molen brew pub with both indoor and outdoor seating. On sunny days the terrace fills up very quickly with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying a cold glass of beer under the shadow of the windmill. Inside, the atmosphere is more like a traditional brewery hall — lively, communal, and built around the love of beer. It reminded me a lot of the beer halls I have visited in Germany over the years.

Speaking of beer, Brouwerij ’t IJ has been brewing here since the mid-1980s, long before craft beer was a trend. Their range is wide, from refreshing blondes and wheat beers to darker, stronger brews. I tried a couple of their classics and was impressed across the board — distinctive flavours, well-balanced, and with that unmistakable freshness that only comes from drinking beer brewed a few steps away. They do an excellent tasting platter of their range of beers – I got this on my first visit (and my last visit in April 2026) and it was an excellent way to sample all the beers. My favourite was Blondie, but the IPA was also excellent and I’ve had both of these again in other places in Amsterdam (you will find a lot of bars across the city stock the Brouwerij ’t IJ range of beers).

The beer sampling platter – so good I got 2 on my last visit in April 2026

Food isn’t the main attraction here, but you’ll find typical Dutch bar snacks to keep you going if needed. Think cheese, sausage, and bitterballen – the perfect accompaniments to a lash of beers! I got a platter of sausage and cheese on my last visit and it went perfectly with the beer. But this is more of a place to drink and snack than sit down for a full meal, but that suits the casual, brewery-first vibe.

I got a sample of everything, just to try all the food. The boar sausage was amazing

I have visited with both groups of friends and with just my wife, and it works equally well. It’s busy enough to always feel lively, but not so crowded that you can’t find a spot if you’re patient. It’s the kind of place you could easily spend an afternoon, especially if the weather allows you to grab a good table outside and watch the world go by.

The staff are friendly and know their beers well, and they are certainly happy to recommend something based on your taste if you ask. Service can be brisk when it’s packed, but it never feels unfriendly. If planning on visiting, I would recommend coming early – most days the pub opens at 2pm (with the exception of the weekend when it opens at 12pm), and by 3pm it’s pretty full and you may not even get a seat without having to wait around for a bit. It’s also a prominent destination for tourists, so bear that in mind if visiting. I would also recommend visiting on a weekday if possible, since it will definitely be quieter than the weekends.

All told, Proeflokaal de Molen is, in my opinion, one of those rare Amsterdam experiences that manages to combine local history, authentic atmosphere, and genuinely excellent beer in one memorable setting. It is not just another pub or casual drinking spot; it feels more like a landmark with its own personality, especially because of its unique location beneath the windmill. That detail alone gives the place a sense of charm and novelty, but what really makes it stand out is the quality of the beer and the relaxed, welcoming character of the space.

For beer enthusiasts, it offers much more than a simple pint. It provides a chance to enjoy Dutch brewing culture in a setting that feels both traditional and distinctive. Even for visitors who may not consider themselves serious craft beer fans, there is something special about sitting down with a well-made drink in such an iconic and unusual location. The combination of good beer, local character, and the unforgettable backdrop of the windmill makes the experience feel truly Amsterdam.

Whether you are a craft beer aficionado searching for a worthwhile stop, a traveler looking for something beyond the usual tourist attractions, or simply someone drawn to the novelty of drinking under a windmill, Proeflokaal de Molen delivers on all fronts. It is the kind of place that leaves a lasting impression and deserves a spot on any beer lover’s Amsterdam itinerary.

I can’t wait to visit again on my next trip.
