The Clayton Hotel Amsterdam American is a beautiful, historic property located right on Leidseplein, one of Amsterdam’s most vibrant squares. I stayed here for three nights and found it to be a stylish, comfortable base with standout service and a lively atmosphere.
Location and First Impressions
The hotel’s location on Leidseplein puts you right at the centre of Amsterdam’s nightlife scene. Bars, cafés, and restaurants line the square, so there’s always something going on just outside the door. If you’re visiting the city to enjoy evenings out, this spot is hard to beat.
While the hotel is not particularly close to Dam Square (around a 25-minute walk or a short tram ride), the trade-off is being just steps away from the entrance to Vondelpark. This makes it an excellent location if you want a mix of nightlife, relaxation, and easy access to Amsterdam’s cultural attractions.
Walking into the Clayton Hotel American, the historic architecture and elegant design immediately set it apart. The interiors are stylish but welcoming, and the hotel carries an old-world charm that’s been carefully balanced with modern comforts.
Dining and Drinks
Breakfast here was consistently good throughout my stay. The buffet offered plenty of choice, with both hot and cold options, and was always fresh and well presented. I didn’t eat an evening meal at the hotel’s restaurant, but judging by the breakfast and the reputation of the dining, it would likely be a solid option.
The bar deserves a mention as well, with excellent cocktails that made for a great way to start or finish an evening – I enjoyed a good number of Pina Colada’s during my stay. Combined with the buzz of Leidseplein just outside, it’s a lively but refined spot to enjoy a drink.
Rooms and Comfort
The rooms are comfortable, clean, and in keeping with the style of the building. During my three-night stay, everything worked as it should — from the air conditioning to the Wi-Fi — and the housekeeping team kept the room immaculate. For a hotel in such a central square, I found noise levels to be manageable, although if you’re very sensitive to sound, you may want to request a room away from the busiest side of the hotel.
Staff and Service
The staff at Clayton Hotel American were one of the highlights of my stay. They were unfailingly helpful and welcoming, always ready with advice or assistance. From check-in to check-out, service felt polished yet friendly, which really added to the overall experience.
Why Choose Clayton Hotel Amsterdam American?
This hotel is perfect if you want to stay in the Leidseplein area, where nightlife, dining, and entertainment are right on your doorstep. It also works well for those who want to balance evenings out with daytime relaxation in nearby Vondelpark. While it’s not the closest option to Dam Square, the tram connections are excellent, so you can get there quickly if needed.
Conclusion
The Clayton Hotel Amsterdam American combines beautiful historic surroundings with modern comfort, great service, and a lively location. The breakfasts were always a strong start to the day, the bar serves excellent cocktails, and the staff make you feel genuinely welcome.
If you want a hotel that puts you right at the heart of the nightlife on Leidseplein, with the bonus of being close to Vondelpark and well connected to the rest of the city, this is a fantastic choice.
