Tucked away on the charming street of Nes, which runs parallel to Rokin, just a short walk from Dam Square, Bierfabriek is one of those places that feels like a hidden gem – the kind of spot you stumble upon and then wonder how you never knew about it before. If you’re looking for something a bit different from Amsterdam’s usual pubs and brown cafés, this is it. A lively brew-pub with character, personality, and downright fantastic food, Bierfabriek is not to be missed!
I actually found this place completely by accident the first time, while wandering around looking for something else. From the outside, you’d probably pass it without a second glance – the entrance is small and understated. But step through the door and you’re hit with the warm buzz of chatter, clinking glasses, and the unmistakable sight of gleaming brewing tanks lined up behind the bar. The space opens up into a big, airy hall with an industrial-meets-rustic feel: wooden tables, open-plan seating, and that wonderful brewery aroma in the air.
One of the first things you’ll notice once seated is the bowls of peanuts on every table. What you don’t expect is the local tradition: people casually cracking shells and tossing them straight onto the floor. At first, I was convinced this must be some kind of bad manners – in Ireland, it would probably get you kicked out for this! But no, here it’s completely normal, and soon you realise it adds to the laid-back, slightly rebellious atmosphere that makes Bierfabriek what it is. It’s casual, it’s relaxed, and it’s meant to be fun.
Of course, the real stars of the show are the house-brewed beers. The selection rotates, but you’ll always find a handful of their own creations on tap, ranging from lighter blondes to darker, maltier options. On my last visit, I went for the Snipperdag, which loosely translates as “snow day”. At around 6%, it has just the right kick – rich, smooth, and dangerously easy to drink. It paired perfectly with the food, and I’d happily go back just to order it again.

Speaking of food, Bierfabriek has a signature dish that regulars will tell you is an absolute must: the Farmer’s Chicken. This French-style poussin is marinated for a full 24 hours in olive oil and fresh herbs before being grilled over charcoal, and it is simply phenomenal. Crispy on the outside, juicy and fragrant inside, it’s the kind of dish where you’re tempted to lick your fingers clean. As we say back home in Ireland, it has “a serious taste of more off it!” – one bite and you’re planning your next. Both times I’ve eaten here, I couldn’t resist ordering it, and I’d bet good money the same thing will happen on my next visit!

But it’s not just about one dish. The wider menu has plenty of hearty options that go beyond your typical bar fare – think homemade fries, generous sharing platters, and dishes designed to complement the beer rather than play second fiddle to it. Combine that with the buzzing, informal atmosphere and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a night out that feels equal parts relaxed and memorable.
Bierfabriek strikes a rare balance: it’s a place where you can sit down for a proper meal, but also somewhere you can happily spend a few hours sampling beers, cracking peanuts, and soaking up the vibe. It’s social, a little quirky, and exactly the kind of spot that makes Amsterdam’s pub scene so enjoyable. Whether you drop in as a break from sightseeing or make it the main event of your evening, it’s the kind of venue that sticks with you long after you leave.
So, if you’re exploring central Amsterdam and want a pub experience that feels a bit different — equal parts brewery, restaurant, and casual hangout — make sure you put Bierfabriek on your list.
Trust me: once you’ve been, you’ll already be planning your return – I am!
